I’ll be starting the next set of classes on July 6th so if you want to learn how to code MQL4 from a professional developer then read on.

As part of my MQL4 training course students are given a video to accompany each lesson.

The video compliments the 30 min one on one weekly chat sessions with screen sharing and is a great way of solidifying what’s being taught. Students can actually look over my shoulder and see how I build EA’s. The course is designed for complete novices with little or no previous programming experience.

Here’s a sample of the very first video that introduces variables to my new students.

If you’d like to learn more about the course and how it can help you to become an expert advisor programmer then please contact me directly.

New classes will start on Tuesday, 6th July, 2010 and I will hold two classes to accommodate those in various time zones. Classes will be at 8am and 6pm (GMT+8). Some people seem to be having problems converting their local time to mine so here’s the time where I am at the moment which should hopefully make it easier for you to figure out the course times.

Steve’s Current Local Time

I will be keeping classes very small so as to offer the best possible learning experience for my students so if you’re interested be sure to get in early. The cost of the 10 week course, including weekly 30 minute chat sessions, videos accompanying each lesson, home work assignments and complete access to me via email is only $500.

Here’s what one of my students from my last training course said of his experience…

“I took the class from Steve Fleming and it covered all the major points of programming in MT4. The videos that were part of the course were very helpful. Also, being able to ask questions of a live person is invaluable. Steve also looked at some code I had put together and pointed me in the right direction to get it working. Learning to program in MT4 is challenging and having someone to help is very useful to jump into the issues that were in my blind spots and the issues that were giving me trouble.”

If you’d like to learn how to program in MQL 4 then please contact me directly

So you want to start learning to program in MQL and begin writing you own EA’s. Well that’s great but before you start hitting the books and reading the tutorials ask yourself this question.

Do you have the right mindset to become a programmer?

Believe it or not most people aren’t naturally gifted with the right mindset to become a computer programmer. It’s a skill that takes time and determination but once acquired, and you can acquire it, it’s a skill that will serve you well not only when it comes to coding but in other aspects of your life too.

The reason it’s not a natural thing is because what’s required is the complete opposite of what you’ve probably been taught in whatever educational facilities you attended. It goes against every thing that your parents told you from your earliest days. We were all taught to ask questions, to search for reasons, to make sense of things and to ‘figure it out’. Now that’s great when it comes to learning maths or geography or English literature but it’s a HUGE hindrance when it comes to trying to learn to program.

If you approach the task of learning to code with this attitude you’re setting yourself up for a world of hurt believe me. I wasted about 3 months of my life over 10 years ago trying to figure out the reasoning behind C++. Why certain strings of characters and symbols did the things they did. And what did I achieve at the end of those 3 months? I’ll tell you…the worlds BIGGEST headache! I was no closer to learning to code in C++ than I was at the start of my journey and then it hit me like a bolt of lighting.

Most popular programming languages are what’s known as ‘high level’ languages. No that doesn’t mean high level as in they’re super advanced and only a maths genius from MIT could understand them. It simply means that the language sits high above the nitty gritty of what actually makes the computer do it’s magic. The ones and zeros, the bits and the bytes, programming languages hide all that complicated stuff from us and for one very good reason…WE DON’T NEED TO KNOW IT!!!

Once you understand that programming languages, whether it’s C++, VB.net, Python or MQL, are specifically designed to hide the complexity of what it is they’re actually doing, your adventure into becoming an MQL coder will become a lot easier. When you open up your mind and just accept that a certain word or line of text WILL create a certain outcome you’ve made a great leap forward and broken through one of the major obstacles that prevents many people from advancing.

Of course you still have to learn the syntax and the various constructs so that you can create your expert advisors but it suddenly becomes a lot easier when your mind is not being restricted by trying to understand EVERYTHING on EVERY tiny level.

Here’s a simple analogy to illustrate my point further.

I’ve been driving for almost 30 years but I know next to nothing about how a car actually works. I have a basic understanding and that’s kept me safe on the road for all this time. If I wanted to learn more I’m sure I could but the point is I don’t need to know all the details that go into making a car do what it does in order for me to be a good driver. I don’t need to know anything about how the factory put the car together or how the engine creates a spark that ignites some stuff that makes the wheels go round (see I told you I know next to nothing). I want to drive so all I need to know is how to operate the thing safely and the various rules of the road.

I’ve noticed that a few students start off my training courses with the wrong mindset and I can almost hear the anguish and frustration in there ‘virtual voices’. From their questions via chat or email I can tell that they’re struggling and trying to grasp the low level technicalities of coding in MQL. They believe that if they could ‘just figure it out’ then it would suddenly become a lot clearer and they can progress but as I’ve just explained their reasoning is flawed.

I usually write back to them with variations of what I’ve just written in this article and once they’ve had time to digest what I’ve explained they usually always come back and see the material with fresh eyes. That’s when the real learning begins.

And NOT being mass marketers as other FX product vendors chose to do and completely disregard YOUR interests.

Does the perfect EA really exist?

It’s a question I’ve asked myself many times and I’m sure it’s crossed your mind too. The perfect EA is surely one that can adapt to the current market conditions, that knows when it’s ranging or trending and knows which strategy to employ at the right time to make maximum profits.

Wouldn’t that be a great thing to have? A robot that could adapt and morph according to what the market was offering and that would be able to extract the most amount of cash.

Well the very talented people at FRWC have gathered some of the finest EA developers in the World via their competition and are not only offering the top 3 robots but also The Fusion Robot which is basically the combination of the best EA’s that performed in each of the various Forex market conditions.

No matter which type of trading strategy is right for the current market the Fusion Robot will adapt accordingly. Whether it’s scalping, swing trading, short term trend trading, short term reverse trading or “price action” – only based trading, the Fusion Robot will make the right choice.

And best of all FRWC offer updates for life, a members area and a team of dedicated support staff that will not only ensure you are set up and making money in a guaranteed 15 minutes or less but are there 24-7 to answer whatever questions you may have. These people have put a lot of thought and effort in producing what looks to be the perfect EA and judging from their live statements it looks like they’re on track to make amazing gains in the coming months. The Fusion EA made over 350% IN ONLY 19 DAYS.

I don’t often recommend commercial EA’s but this one certainly caught my eye because of the fact that it addresses what I believe is the very essence of the ideal EA set up. You should definitely read the full description and do your own due diligence and I think you’ll be impressed too. Read what they have to say and you can even send them an email or two just to confirm the claims they’re making and satisfy yourself.

Good luck with the Fusion Robot and all the other great EA’s that FRWC are including in the package. I hope you make a killing in the Forex market! If you’re serious about automated trading then I would urge you to check out the video and read what they’re offering. You’ll be impressed I promise.

A few weeks ago a client of mine contacted me about a commercial EA he had been testing and was raving about how impressive the results were. He wanted me to check it out and see if I could figure out the strategy and algorithm it was using so that I could program something similar for him.

Well I got a copy of the EA and started running it on my VPS. I let it run for a few days before even checking it but when I did I was pretty impressed. It hadn’t taken too many trades but every one of them was a winner. Of course the first thing I thought was ‘oh no this is another martingale EA with no stoploss that will eventually blow your account’, so I looked a little closer at the trades.

I dragged the closed orders from the history tab in metatrader 4 and dropped them on the chart so I could see the exact entries and exits and try to figure out what the strategy was and also the risk/reward.

The good news was that there was indeed a stoploss but the risk/reward was skewed and definitely not to every ones taste at 1:5. That in itself doesn’t negate this strategy or EA and if you can produce a long enough data sample and confirm that the strike rate warrants such a RR then you could have a winner.

So far the EA has been running for two weeks with 10 trades all of which have closed as winners. I only saw one that came anywhere close to hitting the stoploss but that managed to turn around and make a profit.

I checked out the back tests on the companies site and the hit rate looked pretty good. Now I obviously take the back tests with a grain of salt but those coupled with my brief test on demo definitely make this an EA I’ll keep running on my VPS for a few months and check its progress.

If you want to check out the EA for yourself you can take a look at it here.

It’s called Forex Sorcerer and the site has much more information, statistics and user testimonials.

Good luck in your trading and have a great new year.

Steve

NB: The above results were obtained forward testing EUR/USD M30 on a demo account (IBFX) during December 2009. If you are serious about testing an EA then don’t rely on MT4 strategy tester as it is notoriously unreliable.

I’ve been doing some programming recently that involved trading multiple currency pairs from a single EA. It’s pretty impressive to be able to bang your EA on a chart and see it initiate trades on a totally different pair.

Couple that with the fact you can trade as many or as few pairs as you want and perhaps you can start to see the power of such an EA. I had one monitoring 28 pairs at one time and it was able to open up trades successfully on ALL of them!

Now obviously just because you have an EA that will trade on multiple currencies it doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to make tons of cash. It will still depend on the strength of your system. What it does offer you however is the opportunity to trade many pairs with a single set of settings and see which, if any, pairs perform the best.

If you had 2/3 installations of MT4 sitting on a VPS you could try different settings on each and see which combination of settings and currencies performs the best. If you happen to be one of the lucky few that has a fast and reliable Internet connection you don’t even need a VPS. I, unfortunately, am not one of those particular lucky folk so I’ve got myself a nice deal on a VPS from SWVPS.

It’s best to place such an EA on a currency pair that you can be sure is going to have a lot of movement because obviously that’s what causes the EA to cycle through it’s functionality. I found GBPJPY was more than adequate and meant you didn’t miss too many moves on any other currency.

Another cool thing you can do along the same lines is log data from numerous currencies to csv for latter use in a program like excel or similar. You can then look at the data and try to identify trends and patterns that in turn may enable you to find a more profitable strategy.

Well I hope that’s given you some food for thought and set your mind buzzing. If you have a strategy that would benefit from trading multiple pairs then feel free to drop me a line and I’ll be happy to give you a quote.

Have fun!

Here’s another trailing stop EA I wrote that uses the iCustom function with an external indicator. In this case it’s the BAT ATR indicator but if you study the code and use the meta editor help file a little you should be able to edit it to use any indicator you want.

Obviously the indicator will have to trail price so something like chandelier stops or bb stops would be ideal.

Hope you find this EA of use and are able to use it as both a helpful trading tool and a learning aid for your own EA programming.

Good luck with your trading and don’t forget if you’d like me to code your strategy for you just drop me a line at steveATautomatedtradingsoftware.com and I’ll give you a quote.

Here’s a simple script that I use from time to time and find very useful.

If like me you tend to open up orders knowing where you want to set the stop loss and take profit but are too lazy or don’t have the time to work out the correct price then this script is for you. Once installed the script will allow you to adjust the stop loss and take profit of any order associated to the active charts currency pair instantly. And the great news is it works on 4 or 5 digit brokers so you should be covered.

Simply place the script in your experts/scripts folder and restart MT4. Then expand your scripts folder in the navigation window on the left (ctrl+N if it’s not visible). Find the script, right click on it and select ‘Set Hotkey’. In the box that appears select any letter on the keyboard you want (I use ‘M’ for this particular script) and ‘Alt’ from the drop down box. It’s that easy to install!

If you don’t already have it installed you’ll need to put the OrderReliable.mqh file in your experts/includes folder too. I’ve included it in the download file below.

When you want to use it to change the stop loss and take profit of open orders associated with the currently active currency pair just hit ‘Alt+M’ or whatever letter you assigned as the hotkey, and a box will appear. Enter the two settings for stop loss and take profit and hit ‘OK’. That’s it! You’ve now adjusted your stop loss and take profit without having to bother with tedious calculations etc.

Hope you find this script useful and makes your trading day a little easier.

Download the script here

Good luck!

I’ve coded a simple EA that will trail an open order according to an MA. It’s really simple to use and works like a charm. Makes the task of order trailing a breeze. All you need to do is place your order as normal then set the properties of the EA. Be sure to set the TF variable to the time frame you want to use. This is just an added safety feature so that changing from time frame to time frame won’t trigger different trailing stops.

I’ve provided this to readers of my blog as a special thank you so I hope you enjoy it and it makes your trading even more profitable.

Good luck!
